Resumen Objetivos: Evaluar el efecto letal y subletal de los acaricidas abamectina y dimetoato al depredador P. macropilis y su presa T. urticae. Alcance: Efecto letal y subletal de los acaricidas a P. macropilis y T. urticae. Metodología: Se determinó en experimentos de laboratorio el efecto letal y subletal de los acaricidas abamectina y dimetoato al depredador P. macropilis y su presa T. urticae. Principales resultados: T. urticae fue 2.6 veces y 4.2 veces más tolerante que P. macropilis a la abamectina y al dimetoato, respectivamente. La tasa instantánea de crecimiento poblacional de la presa y el depredador disminuyó linealmente con el aumento de las concentraciones de ambos acaricidas. Sin embargo, la tasa instantánea de crecimiento poblacional del depredador disminuyó más rápidamente que la de la plaga, lo que resultó en la extinción de las poblaciones del depredador, mientras que la población de plagas persistió. Conclusiones: Los agricultores pueden lograr un mejor control de la plaga no aplicando acaricidas, sino manejando las poblaciones de este depredador en el campo utilizando técnicas naturales de conservación del enemigo.

Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the lethal and sublethal effect of the abamectin and dimethoate acaricides on the predator P. macropilis and its prey T. urticae. Scope: Lethal and sublethal effect of acaricides on P. macropilis and T. urticae. Methodology: The lethal and sublethal effect of the abamectin and dimethoate acaricides on the predator P. macropilis and its prey T. urticae was determined in laboratory experiments. Main results: T. urticae was 2.6-fold and 4.2-fold more tolerant than P. macropilis to abamectin and dimethoate, respectively. The instantaneous rate of increase of prey and predator decreased linearly with increasing concentrations of both acaricides. However, the instantaneous rate of increase of the predator population decreased more rapidly than that of the pest, resulting in extinction of predator populations, whereas the pest population persisted. Conclusions: Farmers may achieve better control by not spraying acaricides, but managing the populations of this predator in the field using natural enemy conservation techniques.

Resumen Objetivos: Determinar el periodo de duración de los estados de desarrollo de Trigonospila unicaldasi, bajo cinco regímenes térmicos distintos (18, 20, 22, 25 y 28 °C), usando a Compsus sp. como sustrato y calcular la temperatura base de desarrollo y los grados días acumulados (o constante térmica) para completar los estados de desarrollo del parasitoide. Alcance: Exigencias térmicas de T. unicaldasi. Metodología: Se determinó el tiempo de duración de los diferentes estados de desarrollo de T. unical dasi con la ayuda de un estereomicroscopio, hasta llegar a estado adulto. Los grados días se calcularon mediante el método de la temperatura media. Principales resultados: Los estados de huevo, larva 1, larva 2, larva 3, pupa y periodo de huevo a adulto de T. unicaldasi presentaron temperaturas base de 18,6; 19,2; 17,7; 19,1; 18,6 y 18,8 °C, respectivamente y constantes térmicas de 29,9; 14,5; 21,4; 16,3; 17,5 y 97,4 °D, respectivamente. Conclusiones: Se determinaron las exigencias térmicas de T. unicaldasi, nueva especie parasitoide de Compsus sp.

Abstract Objectives: To determine the period of duration of the developmental stages of Trigonospila unicaldasi, under fi ve diff erent thermal regimes (18, 20, 22, 25 and 28 °C), using Compsus sp. as a substrate, and to calculate the base temperature of development and the accumulated days-degrees (or thermal constant) to complete the developmental stages of the parasitoid. Scope: Thermal requirements of T. unicaldasi. Methodology: The duration of the diff erent stages of development of T. unicaldasi was determined until reaching adulthood with the help of a stereomicroscope. The days-degrees were calculated using the average temperature method. Main results: The stages of the egg, larva 1, larva 2, larva 3, pupa and adult egg of T. unicaldasi, showed base temperatures of 18.6; 19.2; 17.7; 19.1; 18.6 and 18.8 °C respectively, and thermal constants of 29.9; 14.5; 21.4; 16.3; 17.5 and 97.4 °D, respectively. Conclusions: The thermal requirements of T. unicaldasi, a new parasitoid species of Compsus sp., were determined.

Los insectos plaga representan los mayores problemas en plantaciones forestales, principalmente, en monocultivos del género Eucalyptus, debido a los relevantes daños y su persistencia durante todo el ciclo de cultivo. Supputius cincticeps presenta potencial para ser usado en el control biológico de larvas defoliadoras de eucalipto. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la morfología e histología de los órganos reproductivos de S. cincticeps, con el fin de contribuir en el conocimiento de su reproducción, para ser aplicado en programas de cría masiva. Los ovarios y los testículos de ese depredador fueron extraídos y se realizaron cortes de 5mm, en un micrótomo automático, los cuales, fueon descritos y registrados fotográficamente.

Insect pests represent the most remarkable problems in forest plantations. This scenario is present mainly in monocultures of the genus Eucalyptus, due to significant damage that occurs throughout the growing season. Supputius cincticeps might be used biological control agent of eucalyptus defoliating larvae. The aim of this work was to study the morphology and histology of the reproductive organs of S. cincticeps to contribute to the knowledge of their reproduction to be applied in mass rearing programs. Ovaries and testicles of the predator were extracted and sectioned by using a microtome up to obtain tissue sections of 5mm which were described and recorded photographically.

Tetranychus urticae es una importante plaga asociada al cultivo de fresa debido a las altas densidades poblacionales alcanzadas y a los daños ocasionados a las plantas. Los productores utilizan acaricidas en grandes volúmenes sin cumplir los periodos de carencia, ocasionando residuos tóxicos en los frutos, desarrollo de poblaciones resistentes a los productos, destrucción de organismos benéficos, intoxicación de mamíferos y contaminación del medio ambiente. Por lo tanto, es necesario generar otras alternativas de manejo de este ácaro plaga. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar, mediante el análisis conjunto de la concentración letal y subletal, la acción tóxica de productos comerciales a base de nim sobre los ácaros T. urticae y Phytoseiulus macropilis. Fueron controladas poblaciones de T. urticae en plantas de fresa cuando se emplearon concentraciones correspondientes a CL95 de los productos alternativos a base de nim, y también cuando se utilizaron concentraciones inferiores. La aplicación de los productos a base de nim, Neem Pro, Organic Neem y Natuneem en la CL95 y cuando la tasa instantánea de crecimiento poblacional ri=0,1 para el predador representan una alternativa viable para el control del ácaro fitófago T. urticae.

Tetranychus urticae is an important pest associated with strawberry, due to its high densities and plant damage. Farmers use acaricides in large volumes without complying with the window between the last application and harvest, resulting on toxic residues in fruits, as well as pest populations resistant to pesticides, decrement of beneficial organisms, mammalian toxicity and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to generate new alternatives for the control of this mite. The aim of this work was to evaluate the toxic effect of commercial neem-based products on the mites T. urticae and Phytoseiulus macropilis, through a combined analysis using both, lethal and sublethal concentrations. Tetranychus urticae populations were controlled in strawberry plants when neem was used at or below LC95 concentrations. The application of the neem-based products, Neem Pro, Organic Neem and Natuneem at CL95, and when the instantaneous predator’s rate of population increase ri = 0.1, represents a viable alternative to be considered for the control of the phytophagous mite T. urticae.

Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard is an important pest of solanaceous plants, including tomatoes. This mite is characterized by a high reproductive rate, which leads to high population growth in a short period of time causing important economic damage. Control of T. evansi is mainly through synthetic acaricides. In searching for environmentally friendly control measures, we evaluated the efficiency of alternative products to control T. evansi on tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. The products tested were lime sulphur and neem based products. We first estimated the lethal concentration (LC) and instantaneous rate of increase (r i) of T. evansi exposed to different product concentrations in laboratory conditions, and later tested the efficacy of LC95 and the concentrations that restrained mite population growth (r i = 0) in greenhouse conditions. The following treatments were repeated three times: NeemPro (81.0 and 71.6 mg a.i./l), Natuneem (31.1 and 20.4 mg ai/l), Organic Neem (39.1 and 30.4 mg a.i./l), lime sulphur (1.0 and 0.6%) and water (control). For all products, control provided by LC95 was higher than provided for lower concentrations (r i = 0) one day after spraying. However, after five days, for both concentrations, the percentage of T. evansi population reduction was superior to 95% and increased over time. Only plants sprayed with Natuneem (31.1 mg a.i./l) showed symptoms of phytotoxicity. Lime sulphur and neem based products, applied in appropriate concentrations and formulations, bear out as a viable alternative to control T. evansi on tomato plants.

Mecanismos de defensa en plantas pueden ser activados por estímulos externos como herbivoría. Es bien conocido que la defensa inducida ocurre después de cortos períodos de herbivoría, pero se conoce poco acerca de la inducción de larga duración. En este artículo se estudió los efectos de la defensa inducida en árboles de Eucalyptus sobre Thyrinteina arnobia (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) durante cuatro generaciones Los efectos de la inducción de plantas de Eucalipto parecieron aumentar gradualmente con períodos prolongados de herbivoría. Según nuestro conocimiento es la primera demostración que la defensa inducida cambia de modo gradual con la herbivoría a largo plazo. Eso sugiere que estos árboles, y posiblemente muchas otras plantas, gradualmente invierten más en defensa inducida con ataques prolongados de herbívoros.

Mechanisms of defense in plants can be activated by external stimuli such as herbivory. It is well-known that such induced defense occurs after short periods of herbivory, but little is known about long-term induction. In this paper, we studied the effects of induced defenses of Eucalyptus trees on Thyrinteina arnobia (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) over four generations. The effects of induction of eucalypt plants seemed to increase gradually with prolonged periods of herbivory. To our knowledge it is the first demonstration that induced defense changes in a gradual way with long-term herbivory. This suggests that these trees, and possibly many other plants, gradually invest more in induced defense with prolonged herbivore attacks.

The attack of phytophagous mites may induce plants to produce volatiles, which in turn may attract predators. The occurrence of multiple phytophagous infestations on plants may influence predator response. In this paper, we investigated whether the attraction of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) to phytophagous-infested plants would change with the simultaneous presence of two tetranichid mites Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor) and Tetranychus urticae Koch. While the former species is rarely found on strawberry plants and is only occasionally found in association with P. macropilis, the latter is commonly found on strawberry plants and is frequently found in association with P. macropilis. Y-tube olfactometer test assays demonstrated that the predator preferred plants infested with T. urticae, avoided plants infested with O. ilicis, and had no preference for plants infested with both phytophagous mite species. These results indicated that the presence of a non-prey species (O. ilicis) on a given plant can alter the response of the predator to one of its prey (T. urticae). The consequences of the predatory behavior determined in this study on the predator ability to control T. urticae population on strawberry plants are discussed.

O morangueiro, Fragaria x ananassa, pode ser atacado por diferentes espécies de ácaros fitófagos, dentre elas o ácaro-vermelho, Oligonychus ilicis McGregor, e o ácaro-rajado, Tetranychus urticae Kock. Essas espécies são encontradas juntas, alimentando-se, com maior freqüência, sobre a epiderme adaxial e abaxial das folhas, respectivamente. Neste trabalho estudou-se o padrão de escolha de O. ilicis e T. urticae por sítio de alimentação em plantas de morangueiro. Duas hipóteses foram formuladas: a primeira, que a escolha por sítios de alimentação estaria relacionada à aptidão das espécies; a segunda, que esta escolha seria determinada pela presença do heteroespecífico. Com o objetivo de testar tais hipóteses, avaliou-se a preferência, biologia e sucesso reprodutivo de O. ilicis e T. urticae sobre a face abaxial e adaxial de folhas de morangueiro infestadas ou não pelo heteroespecífico. O. ilicis preferiu permanecer sobre a face adaxial enquanto T. urticae preferiu permanecer sobre a face abaxial de folhas de morangueiro. A preferência pelas faces foliares correlacionou-se com o sucesso reprodutivo das espécies, avaliado pela taxa intrínseca de crescimento populacional (r m). O padrão de escolha não se alterou quando as espécies foram submetidas ao teste de escolha entre as faces foliares previamente infestadas pelo heteroespecífico. É discutida a possibilidade de T. urticae induzir defesas da planta capazes de reduzir a aptidão de O. ilicis e vice-versa. A possibilidade dessas espécies permanecerem juntas sobre plantas de morangueiro aumenta a capacidade de dano à cultura.

Many phytophagous mites can attack strawberry plants, Fragaria x ananassa, among them the southern red mite, Oligonychus ilicis McGregor, and the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. They are found together feeding on the same plant on the upper and underside of the leaves, respectively. Here we studied the choice for feeding sites of O. ilicis and T. urticae on strawberry plants. The first hypothesis tested whether the feeding site choice would be related to the fitness of the species. The second hypothesis dealt whether the feeding site would be determined by the presence of a heterospecific mite. We evaluated the preference, biology and reproductive success of O. ilicis and T. urticae on the under and upper side surface of strawberry leaves infested or not by the heterospecific. O. ilicis preferred to stay on the upper side surface while T. urticae preferred the underside. The preference for the leaf surface correlated with the reproductive success of the species (measured by the intrinsic growth rate). The choice pattern of feeding sites did not alter when the choice test was applied using sites previously infested by heterospecific. Although O. ilicis and T. urticae, apparently, do not interact directly for feeding sites, there is a chance that the first species induces defenses in strawberry plant enabling to reduce the fitness of the second species. The possibility of those species stay together on strawberry plant increases the damage capacity to the culture.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os parâmetros biológicos do ácaro predador Phytoseiulus macropilis na ausência de alimento por períodos de um a seis dias. Foram avaliados: o número de ovos por fêmea ao dia; o número total de ovos; a longevidade de fêmeas; e a razão sexual dos descendentes. Fêmeas que ficaram por mais de três dias sem alimento apresentaram queda em todas variáveis biológicas avaliadas. O predador P. macropilis somente se estabelecerá em campo se as manchas ocupadas pelo ácaro-rajado não estiverem muito distantes umas das outras.

The objective of this work was to access the biological parameters of the predator mite Phytoseiulus macropilis in the food absence for periods of one or more days. Data evaluated were: egg number per female per day; total number of eggs; longevity of females; and the offspring sex rate. Female in starvation for three or more days showed decrease in all biological variables. P. macropilis only will settle in the field if patch populations occupied by spider mite are not very distant from each other.

Joaninhas são eficazes predadores de artrópodes atuando diretamente sobre certas pragas e alimentando-se de parte ou de todo o corpo da presa. Dentre os coccinelídeos, Eriopis connexa possui uma posição de destaque no controle de pulgões. Os coccinelídeos por serem predadores generalistas, apresentam uma variabilidade na escolha de presas, alimentando-se também de ácaros. No Brasil, trabalhos realizados com E. connexa, apenas relatam a sua ocorrência, sendo assim este trabalho objetivou investigar a influência de duas fontes alimentares: pulgões e ácaros, na morfologia do corpo gorduroso de E. connexa. Os resultados mostraram que as células do corpo gorduroso dos indivíduos alimentados com pulgões apresentaram áreas mais de três vezes superiores (511 ± 98,7µm²) que as das células do corpo gorduroso de indivíduos alimentados com ácaros (162 ± 34,9µm²). Além disso, testes histoquímicos demonstraram que a quantidade de nutrientes estocados no corpo gorduroso também foi superior em indivíduos alimentados com pulgões.

This work investigated the influence of two alimentary sources: aphids and mites, in the morphology of the fat body of E. connexa. Results showed that fat body cells of individuals fed with aphids presented areas more than three folds higher (511 ± 98,7µm²) than those of beetles fed with mites (162 ± 34,9µm²). Histochemical tests showed that nutrient amount stored in fat body was higher in lady-beetles fed on aphids.

O sistema de defesa induzido das plantas é ativado após a ocorrência do dano provocado por um herbívoro. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar se plantas de eucalipto (Eucalyptus grandis) atacadas previamente por lagartas de Thyrinteina arnobia tornam-se resistentes ao corte de operárias de Atta sexdens rubropilosa. Não houve diferença significativa no tempo gasto por operárias dessa formiga em iniciar o corte em plantas atacadas ou não. Porém, houve diferença significativa no tamanho de fragmentos cortados. Concluiu-se que plantas previamente atacadas tornam-se menos atrativas para A. sexdens rubropilosa devido à ativação do seu sistema de defesa induzido.

The induced defense system of plants is activated after the occurrence of damage by a herbivore. The objective of this work was to evaluate whether plants of Eucalyptus grandis previously attacked by larvae of Thyrinteina arnobia become resistant to cutting by the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa. There was no significant difference in the lapse of time spent by the workers of this ant before they started cutting plants previously attacked or not. There was significant reduction in the size of leaf fragments cut by the ants. It was concluded that plants previously attacked were less attractive to the leaf cutter due to the activation of their induced defense system.

Os plantios de Eucalyptus no Brasil podem sofrer danos por espécies nativas de insetos de diversas ordens, como Orthoptera, Coleoptera e Lepidoptera. Esses insetos podem alimentar-se tanto de mirtáceas brasileiras como goiabeira, gabirobeira, jabuticabeira, entre outras, como de espécies do gênero Eucalyptus. Entre os desfolhadores, destaca-se Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) como o mais daninho dessa ordem para a eucaliptocultura brasileira. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar aspectos biológicos de adultos de T. arnobia provenientes de lagartas alimentadas com plantas de eucalipto e, ou, goiabeira. Adultos deste inseto criados em folhas de eucalipto e, ou, de goiabeira apresentaram diferenças significativas para a maioria dos aspectos biológicos avaliados, exceto para a duração dos períodos de préoviposição, de oviposição e razão sexual. Assim, insetos herbívoros que vivem em hospedeiros filogeneticamente próximos ao eucalipto são capazes de causar danos consideráveis em reflorestamentos com espécies desse grupo, o que provavelmente ocorre pelo fato de elas estarem ainda em processo de adaptação a essa praga que atacaria o eucalipto, por estar fugindo da pressão exercida por barreiras físicas e químicas existentes nas mirtáceas nativas brasileiras.

Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil may be damaged by native insects of many orders including Orthoptera, Coleoptera and Lepidoptera. These insects feed on Brazilian tree species of the family Myrtaceae to which the genus Eucalyptus belongs. The Lepidoptera Thyrinteina arnobia Stoll (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is the most harmful defoliator of Eucalyptus in Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate biological aspects of T. arnobia adults originated from caterpillars fed on guava or eucalyptus plants. Adults of T. arnobia originated from caterpillars reared with eucalyptus or guava leaves presented significant differences for most biological aspects evaluated, except for duration of preoviposition and oviposition periods and sex ratio. This shows that species feeding on host plants related to eucalyptus can cause considerable damage in reforestation with species of this genus. T. arnobia insects are still undergoing an imposed adaptation process to eucalyptus plants and likely feed on these plants to escape from pressure by physical and chemical barriers of Brazilian native Myrtaceae.

As plantas podem desenvolver mecanismos de defesa que reduzem o efeito do ataque de herbívoros. Em resposta, os insetos herbívoros evoluem de forma a quebrar os mecanismos de defesa das plantas. Uma das formas que os insetos têm de escapar do sistema de defesa das plantas é migrar para outros hospedeiros cujo sistema de defesa não seja eficiente a seu ataque. No Brasil, em plantios de Eucalyptus spp., observam-se surtos freqüentes da lagarta desfolhadora Thyrinteina arnobia Stoll, cujo hospedeiro nativo é a goiaba. A não ocorrência de surtos populacionais em goiaba pode estar relacionada ao desenvolvimento de mecanismos de defesa, nessa espécie de Myrtaceae, o que aparentemente ainda não ocorreu com o eucalipto. Por isso, investigou-se neste trabalho se o desempenho de T. arnobia criada em seu hospedeiro de origem, plantas de goiaba, difere do seu desempenho em hospedeiro exótico, o eucalipto. A taxa intrínseca de crescimento populacional de T. arnobia (r m) foi maior em eucalipto do que em plantas de goiaba. O pior desempenho de T. arnobia em plantas de goiaba possivelmente se deu por atuação do sistema de defesa constitutiva dessas plantas. Barreiras químicas das plantas de goiaba podem estar atuando principalmente na redução da digestibilidade do inseto, afetando o desenvolvimento da população atual e, por conseguinte, o das próximas gerações.

Plants can develop mechanisms of defense that reduces the effects of herbivore attacks. In response, the herbivores evolve to breaking the defense mechanisms of plants. Herbivores may also escape from the plant defense system by migrating to other host whose defense is not effective against them. In Brazil, outbreaks of the defoliator caterpillar Thyrinteina arnobia Stoll in Eucalyptus sp. are frequently observed. However, the native host of this insect is guava, Psidium guajava where outbreaks are not registered. The absence of outbreaks in P. guajava may be related to the development of defense mechanisms in that specie of Myrtaceae, which has apparently not yet occurred on eucalyptus. Here we investigated the performance of T. arnobia reared on its origin host plant, in comparison with those reared on its exotic host, Eucalyptus sp. The intrinsic growth rate of T. arnobia was higher on eucalyptus than on P. guajava. It is possible that the defense mechanism on guava plants acts as a chemical barrier, probably reducing the digestibility of the insect, which could affect the development of the current population and the next generations.

O sistema de defesa induzido de plantas é ativado quando herbívoros se alimentam das mesmas. Alternativamente, herbívoros podem se adaptar a espécies de plantas filogeneticamente próximas ao seu hospedeiro de origem. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar o desenvolvimento de Thyrinteina arnobia em plantas de goiaba (hospedeiro de origem) e de eucalipto (hospedeiro novo) em campo. Adicionalmente, estudou-se a biologia deste inseto em laboratório fornecendo folhas de eucalipto previamente danificadas por lagartas de T. arnobia e folhas sem danos. A sobrevivência larval em eucalipto, 78,00%, foi superior à de goiaba, 29,33%. O ciclo larval foi de 27,90 dias em goiaba e de 30,30 dias em eucalipto. Em testes de laboratório, o ciclo larval em eucalipto limpo, 36,39 dias, foi maior do que em eucalipto danificado, 32,89 dias. A mortalidade larval em eucalipto danificado foi de 30,00% e de 10,00% em eucalipto limpo. Os resultados indicam que a goiaba não é um bom hospedeiro para T. arnobia possivelmente por apresentar um sistema mais efetivo de defesa. Embora o eucalipto possa ser um hospedeiro mais favorável ao desenvolvimento e estabelecimento do inseto, pode também reduzir populações do herbívoro ativando o seu sistema de defesa induzido.

The induced defense system of plants is activated when herbivorous start to injury plants. Alternatively, herbivores may adapt to plants that are phylogenetically close to their original host. This work aimed at comparing the life history of Thyrinteina arnobia on guava plants (origin host) with eucalyptus (the new host) in the field. The biology of the insect in the laboratory on both eucalyptus leaves previously injured by the caterpillars of T. arnobia and on clean leaves was also studied. In the field, the larvae survivorship of T. arnobia on eucalyptus was 78.00% and on guava was 29.33%. The larvae cycle was 27.90 days on guava and 30.30 days on eucalyptus. At the laboratory, tests showed that the larvae cycle on clean eucalyptus leaves lasted 36.39 days while on previously injured leaves, only 32.89 days. The larvae mortality on injured eucalyptus leaves was 30.00%, and 10.00% on clean leaves. The results indicate that guava plants are not a suitable host for T. arnobia probably due to a more effective defense system. Although the eucalyptus may be a better host, it can also reduce the herbivore population by activating its herbivore induced defense system.

ABSTRACT Population dynamics of Coleoptera species was studied in an Eucalyptus grandis plantation in Nova Era district, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Five light traps were used each two weeks, from August, 1994 to July, 1995. The insects collected were identified based on the literature and entomological collections by species or family. A total of 2,449 insects was collected being Epicauta sp. (Meloidae), Colaspis sp.2 (Chrysomelidae) and Oxycheila tristes (Cicindelidae), the most abundant species, with respectively 40, 37 and 20 insects, which represented 10.75%, 9.95% and 5.38% of the insects identified by species. Melolonthidae, Carabidae and Chrysomelidae showed highest numbers of insects and species with 37.02%, 36.46% and 5.68% of the insects identified by family, respectively. Coleoptera insects were collected during all sampling period but higher number of population peaks of these species were registered between September and January.

RESUMO Foi estudada a flutuação populacional de espécies da ordem Coleoptera em plantios de Eucalyptus grandis na região de Nova Era, estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram utilizadas cinco armadilhas luminosas Intral, modelo AL 012 providas de luz negra, com baterias de 12 volts. Os insetos coletados foram identificados de acordo com a literatura e coleções entomológicas por espécie ou por família. O levantamento ocorreu a cada quinze dias no período de agosto de 1994 a julho de 1995. Foram coletados 2449 indivíduos, sendo Epicauta sp. (Meloidae), Colaspis sp.2 (Chrysomelidae) e Oxycheila tristes (Cicindelidae) as espécies mais coletadas, representando, respectivamente, 10,75%, 9,95% e 5,38% dos indivíduos coletados por espécie. As famílias com maiores números de indivíduos e de espécies foram Melolonthidae, Carabidae e Chrysomelidae com 37,02%, 36,46% e 5,68%, respectivamente dos indivíduos identificados por família. Foram coletados coleópteros em todo o período de amostragem, mas os maiores picos populacionais para esses insetos foram registrados entre setembro e janeiro.
